Benefits of using wood fuel

The benefits of using wood fuel are numerous and diverse.  The social, economic and environmental benefits in comparison to conventional fuel alternatives include:

Currently much of the wood from forestry is unused and ends up in landfill.  Studies indicate that currently 3.1 million tonnes of forestry residues are produced each year and a large fraction of this has no suitable market. This can lead to a lack of investment in our woodlands and a consequent decline in biodiversity.

Burning biomass is a ‘carbon-neutral’ process as during tree growth photosynthesis uses carbon to store solar energy.  This is sustainable as long as trees are replanted. 

Fuel delivery has a very minor impact on the sustainability of biomass energy, typically accounting for less than 3% of the energy and carbon saved.
